roadtrip: pacific northwest

I have always enjoyed the 4th of July holiday, especially family, food, and of course, the fireworks. Generally, I don't venture off too far during this time of the year and enjoy the festivities either in my hometown, Sacramento, or in Central California with extended family. This year, however, I took a road trip up to the Pacific Northwest. And, I took the furbabies! It's their first real roadtrip... and I was definitely excited/nervous about bringing them along. Luckily, they were perfect on the trip!  Here's how it went...

thursday 07.02 | sacramento to portland (580 miles)

i knew this was going to be a long drive. i've done this drive several times before, though not recently. it's usually a 9-10 hour drive, depending on the route you choose, road conditions and how fast you're going. there are plenty of rest stops along the way, and some nice scenery throughout.

  • accomodations: hilton portland and executive towers - arrived in portland shortly after 4 pm. it's a tad later than what i was aiming for, but not by much. after a quick check-in to the hotel, we unloaded and parked the car, and took the dogs for a quick walking tour of the immediate vicinity.
  • dinner: pok pok - let me just start off by saying that this is not your ordinary thai restaurant. it's a must go if you love authentic thai food and/or drinks.
friday 07.03 | discover portland
  • coffee: stumptown coffee - solid coffee, you can find them at various locations. strong, flavorful
  • donuts: blue star donuts - i know most people swear by voodoo, but blue star is another great option. lines do get long, but they have some great flavors. everything made fresh daily
  • powells books - a booklover's dream. the never ending bookstore. <3 <3 (get the map, you'll need it)
  • deschutes brewery -  a great place to stop by for drinks and grab lunch. the place was packed, but service was friendly and prompt. beer was good, but OMG the fries and burgers!
  • oregon museum of science and industry (omsi) - i love museums, and this one is a great one with lots of exhibits and hands on activities for the young ones (or the young at heart)
  • happy hour: the secret society - right next to toro bravo, a great place to stop by for a drink before (or after dinner). they also have a recording studio and dance lessons for anyone interested.
  • dinner: toro bravo - tapas! yum!
  • drinks: bailey's taproom - interesting taproom - they have a monitor to show what's on tap and how much beer is left - games and easy chill vibe
saturday 07.04 | portland to seattle (173 miles)
  • accomodations: hotel max - cute artsy hotel, great location. and of course, pet friendly - they even gave my little ones free treats! and oh, free beer every day during happy hour in the lobby. say what??
  • pike place market - love this place, but given it was 4th of july, there was a lot of touristy folks and it was just super crowded. and.. it was HOT.
  • south lake union, fireworks over the lake. tons of people, but everyone was relaxed, hanging out, just having a good time. if you go, make sure you didn't drive ... the scene afterwards was a bit nutty
sunday 07.05 | seattle to vancouver (bc)  (142 x 2 miles rt)
  • yaletown - cute, funky neighborhood in vc. plenty of food options
  • nike underground - nike converted a parking lot into a hip underground soccer playground. no signage, no labels, just have to look for the 2 guys playing soccer out in the street and they point you in the right direction.  once inside, you're in this fantastic underground playground! great job nike!
  • world cup fan zone - where all the other fans are! go team USA!
monday 07.06 | seattle to sacramento (752 miles)
  • quick stop in eugene to look at the autzen stadium. go ducks!

curra's grill

the Mother of all Mex

my coworker and I decided to venture out to dinner tonight and one of our clients recommended curra's. we did a quick search on yelp, checked the website and thought it looked pretty good. I mean, "the Mother of all Mex"...

upon arrival, we can immediately smell the grill, in a good way. we walked in, were promptly seated, and given chips, salsa and water.

we also ordered a queso dip to go with the chips and some drinks.

two words: avocado margarita

yep. you heard right! it was a blended creamy concoction that was truly delish! I was a bit skeptical, but yelpers really love it and well, I couldn't not try it, right?

after mulling over the menu for some time we finally asked the waiter for some suggestions and ended up with a jr order of the tamales and enchiladas to share. (there were many options and they allowed you to mix various sauces and meats however you like.) we ended up with 2 pork, 1 chicken, and 1 bean tamale, a chicken enchilada with chipotle aside and a beef enchilada with the red sauce.

in short, everything we tasted was at minimum good.

I thought pork tamales were the most savory bites. the chicken and bean tamales, while good, didn't quite stack up when compared with the pork one. as for the enchiladas, the sauces definitely had a great kick

koriente ATX

I'm traveling to Austin, TX for business this week and I must admit I don't feel as prepared as I had hoped. My last trip here was a quick one - I arrived mid afternoon, had a quick meeting, met up with coworkers for dinner, then headed to morning meetings. After that, hopped back on a jet-plane back home. This time, I'll have a lot more "spare time" and no pre-planned meal. (My post about the previous meal to come soon.) I arrived a day earlier in order to accommodate an meeting the following day. (Flights to/from SMF/AUS are pretty limited.) I departed SMF at the buttcrack of dawn, made a pit stop (layover) in Phoenix, and arrived in squelching AUS around 3 PM. Due to the time change, my body thinks it's only 1 PM, but instead of eating a late lunch then having dinner again, I decided I'll just wait it out for dinner.

Close to dinner time, I check Yelp to help me find a decent place to eat. I wasn't feeling any particular genre of food, and was really just looking for something good, inexpensive, and relatively healthy. I first did a search for Ramen, but considering the 80% humidity outside, I thought hot soup would just be too much.

I settled on Koriente - rave reviews, interesting menu, low price, and bubble tea. Plus is was just a short walk from my hotel.

The location was on a main corridor, but there was plenty of parking in the back for drivers. The menu was simple, but very customizable.

I opted for the Spicy Obake Bowl (rice bowl dish which comes standard with grilled mushrooms, carrots, broccoli) over a bed of rice and a choice of protein (beef, chicken, tofu, and shrimp for an extra cost). I picked the beef and decided to add tofu (I LOVE tofu). I also asked for half noodles and half rice so I can try it out. I was offered complimentary miso soup (yay!) and added a strawberry bubble tea.

Overall, the food did not disappoint. Food and drinks totaled a mere $13 + tips and was pretty filling. The beef was tender and juicy. The tofu was a little firm for my preference but I could understand since they grilled it. I didn't care for the mushroom or the noodles too much (it was the clear noodles) but as a whole, the meal was satisfying.

wrap n' roll sushi burrito

yep. you heard right. a giant burrito-sized sushi roll. don't believe me?

l: shrimp tempura burrito. r: volcano nachos

this place was tucked deep in Elk Grove, but word is they opened up a location in mid-town.

the menu is not too shabby: a dozen or so appetizers, quite a few burrito options, and they also offer some basic lunch boxes. my sister and I stopped by for lunch and decided to split a burrito and appetizer. the burrito was a little awkward to eat due to it's size (and the fact that it was wrapped in rice...) so after a while I simply took to using a fork on it.

both dishes were quite tasty and was way more food than we could finish

pork belly buns!

Every time I get into a stalemate about what to eat, I end up at Tako's. It's a small Korean fusion joint in Midtown Sacramento that brings some truly unique flavors. Serving Korean spiced meats in a variety of Mexican staples. Their latest- the pork belly buns (top)! Go on, try it! Also pictured, the nachos with bulgogi.

heat shabu

sha·bu-sha·bu (shä'boo-shä'boo) n. A Japanese dish of thin slices of meat and vegetables cooked at table in a simmering pot of broth, then dipped into any of various sauces. if you've never had shabu shabu, Heat Shabu in Sacramento is a great place to try it out. they have all you can eat or order by the plate options. meat selections include Kobe beef, lamb, pork, and seafood and there are a few broths to pick from. bring some friends (and your appetite) and enjoy!
